Background Terms

~CAD~ "Computer Aided Drafting," an acronym used to describe the design process using specialized computer software

~Gantt Chart~ A visual tool used to plan out a project.  It consists of a list of tasks to be done and the project time frame.  A filled in square indicates the status of the project and at what time it is planned to be completed.

~Pile~ A cylindrical, solid rod driven into the ground that makes up the foundation.  Transmits forces into the solid ground deep beneath the structure.

~Reinforced Concrete~ Concrete sub-structures that are made stronger by introducing metal bracings into the concrete.  This makes the concrete handle tension forces better.

What is Burj Khalifa?
~Burj Khalifa is a skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates that was completed in 2008.  It is the tallest building in the world.

How tall is Burj Khalifa?
~828 meters or 2,717 feet

What makes Burj Khalifa so magnificent?
~Burj Khalifa is one of the most ambitious engineering projects in human history.  Its sheer height and size presented seemingly insurmountable challenges early on, and engineers had to re-evaluate construction practices to accommodate building such a structure.

What does "Burj Khalifa" mean?
~"Burj Khalifa" means "Khalifa's Tower" in Arabic.  Sheik Khalifa is the ruling emir of Abu Dhabi and funded the project when financial reserves were low.
